The Dougherty Arts Center will host a virtual Artist Talk featuring both Sarah Wilson and Caroline Walker. Each artist will discuss their artistic background, the progress of their social practice projects, and the inspiration behind their message. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and delve further into their process. Register to receive the Zoom link. About the program: The Austin Parks and Recreation Department’s Division of Museums and Cultural Programs is launching ArtsResponders: Social Practice Responds to COVID-19. Sites including The Dougherty Arts Center, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center, the Asian American Resource Center, as well as the Elisabet Ney Museum and Oakwood Cemetery Chapel, have commissioned artists to train in Social Practice and engage the community in an artistic response to cope with and overcome COVID-19. The program will run October 5 to March 31, 2021. About the artists: Sarah Wilson is an Austin-raised photographer and cinematographer. Much of her work has focused on communities in crisis. Through portraiture and documentary storytelling, she's been fortunate to tell multifaceted visual stories of disparate communities. Caroline Walker is a multi-disciplinary artist who combines traditional materials and new technology including augmented reality experiences. An Austinite since 2015, her work received 1st place in the three-dimensional category at Georgetown Art Center as well as a the Bronze Award from Bastrop Art in Public Places. About the Dougherty Arts Center: Since 1978, the DAC has thrived as one of Austin’s most cherished and affordable community arts centers, featuring live performances, gallery exhibits, and art classes.
