FotoATX 2020 Artist Talks

August 26 - August 26,2020

Note: This is an online-only event. From The Dougherty Art Center. "About this Event The Dougherty Arts Center is proud to host three Austin-based photographers during FotoATX 2020. Listen in as Sarah Luna, Amar Gupta, and Michelle Gardella discuss the process and inspiration behind their work. Have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about their artistic practice. This series of talks will begin at 7pm and requires only one registration to view all three. About Sara Luna With a background in spiritual psychology, Luna is attuned to the essence behind all acts of creation. Her approach to the visual world is from a perspective of open curiosity and wonder. The subjects used in her artwork are ordinary materials that conceal an inner life that is revealed through the photographic process. As a result, the nature of the images in this body of work is mysterious and indecipherable, as if viewed through a veil. This process of sculpture and photography, use of color, energy, and form, creates a visual poem - a fluid, meditative, and thoughtful space for viewers to experience the work. About Michelle Gardella Gardella's ongoing portrait series of women spans eleven years and multiple rivers found across the United States. Her photographs draw upon her own experiences of poverty and adoption, and explore what it means to belong. By capturing intimate moments between women and their families, she investigates what truly makes us who we are when the cultural definitions of class, success, and identity are removed. In doing so, the artist is able to inch closer to her own understanding of self and belonging. About Amar Gupta A photographic narrative by Gupta examines the culture of Muay Thai training camps in rural Thailand. Thoughtfully curated images reflect the importance of community within these camps that often serve a higher or secondary purpose. Some camps are free of charge and are put in place to urge teens and young adults to remain healthy and drug free. Others act mainly as a children's daycare or history class. Both train their communities in the martial art form that converts ones body into a caricature of the most savage weapons of war. About FotoATX Rediscover our City’s unique character and voice through this month-long festival celebrating local photographers. In its third year, FotoATX is a collaboration between the City of Austin’s Museums and Cultural Programs Division of the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, the City’s Library Division, and other community partners. This year, FotoATX is going virtual! We invite you to support our artists and browse online content, visit their websites, and interact with their social media."
