Best/Worst No. 4: “20 to Watch”

WORST: 20 to Watch at the Austin Museum of Art should have been 5 to Watch. The first two incarnations of the triennial exhibition set high expectations for the third, but this time out it seems like AMOA was struggling to fill a 20-artist quota. Good New Art in Austin was thin on the ground, but well documented. AMOA highlighted the artists and their work in an elaborate but ridiculously slow-loading website featuring exceptionally counterintuitive navigation. Jill Pangallo was the standout of the show with a crackpot series of works built around the artist and her look-alike doll. Pangallo’s work is smart, funny, highly original and kinda creepy. Let’s hope for more finds like her in the next show.
