Repeated vandalism, gunshots, graffiti, and attempted theft from Prada Marfa, Elmgreen and Dragset’s fake upscale shoe emporium in the West Texas Desert on highway 90 near Valentine, are slowly causing the artist duo to rethink their iconic project. Although it was always intended to decay, the Berlin-based team imagined it would be a “natural” process of relentless sun and wind, rather than as as a source of rural entertainment. Tired of repeatedly repairing the piece, they discussed pulling the plug on it, leaving it a “beautiful memory.”
