
Speaking at a General Electric plant in Wisconsin today, President Obama encouraged young people to consider training programs for skilled manufacturing work. “I promise you, folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art-history degree,” The president immediately added: “Now, nothing wrong with an art-history degree—I love art history—I don’t want to get a bunch e-mails from everybody.”
This comment was reported by a number of newspapers, including the Washington Post and the National Review, whose headlines referred to the President alienating his “base.”
